The 2014 Commonwealth Games (officially the XX Commonwealth Games) is being held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
It is the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland with around 4,950 athletes from 71 different nations and territories competing in 17 different sports, although the country previously hosted the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Over the last 10 years, however, Glasgow and Scotland had staged World, Commonwealth, European, or British events in all 17 sports proposed for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, including the World Badminton Championships in 1997.
Every memorable sporting event has a mascot to remember it by. Each mascot is distinct, representing the traditional values and national identity of the hosts and the friendly spirit of the games to welcome visitors.
Similarly, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014 has Clyde, a thistle just like the national symbol of Scotland. Clyde grew up under the care of Captain Thistle and his love for sports comes from his visits to the many Commonwealth nations and territories on Captain Thistle’s ship, the HMS Shipshape.
Now with athletes and visitors from the Commonwealth all visiting Glasgow for the Games, it’s time for Clyde to play host and foster the spirit of the games. Watch his amazing story here!
